Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin received his first commission in his father's regiment at the age of 5; he joined, with eight years seniority, as a lieutenant at age 14. He became a captain in 1793. At the age of 25, he became a lieutenant-colonel and in 1798 led a light battalion with distinction in the Ostend expedition. He later served in Denmark, Portugal, and India.
